How Much Data Does Streaming Use? (And How to Save It)

By NetMirror Team5 min readUpdated June 14, 2026

If you stream on mobile data or live with a monthly cap, data use is a real concern. The numbers vary by quality more than most people realize. Here is roughly what an hour of streaming costs, and how to stretch your allowance.

Data use per hour, by quality

  • Low / SD (480p): around 0.5–0.7 GB per hour
  • HD (720p–1080p): around 1.5–3 GB per hour
  • 4K / Ultra HD: around 7 GB or more per hour
  • Audio-only or music: a small fraction of the above

These are estimates — actual use depends on the content, codec and how busy the scene is. Fast-moving action uses more data than a static talking-head scene at the same resolution.

How to use less data

Set a quality cap

The single biggest lever is resolution. Capping at HD instead of 4K can cut your usage by more than half with little visible difference on small screens.

Download on Wi-Fi where supported

If your app allows offline viewing, download over Wi-Fi and watch later on mobile data-free.

Use Wi-Fi for long sessions

Save mobile data for short, on-the-go viewing and lean on Wi-Fi for full movies and binge sessions.

Let the app do the work

Apps with adaptive bitrate streaming, like NetMirror, automatically scale quality to your connection — so on a weak mobile signal you naturally use less data without manually fiddling with settings.

Capping quality at HD is the easiest data win there is — half the usage, and on a phone you can barely tell.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does one hour of HD streaming use?

Roughly 1.5–3 GB per hour for HD, depending on the resolution and how much motion is in the content.

Does 4K really use that much more data?

Yes — 4K can use 7 GB or more per hour, several times what HD uses. On limited plans, HD is the smart default.

How can I reduce streaming data use?

Cap the quality at SD or HD, download over Wi-Fi for offline viewing where supported, and use Wi-Fi for long sessions.
