How Much Data Does Streaming Use? (And How to Save It)

• Low / SD (480p): around 0.5–0.7 GB per hour
• HD (720p–1080p): around 1.5–3 GB per hour
• 4K / Ultra HD: around 7 GB or more per hour
• Audio-only or music: a small fraction of the above

These are estimates — actual use depends on the content, codec and how busy the scene is. Fast-moving action uses more data than a static talking-head scene at the same resolution.

How to use less data

Set a quality cap

The single biggest lever is resolution. Capping at HD instead of 4K can cut your usage by more than half with little visible difference on small screens.
